Brand: ZOMG Smells
Now that the lava fountains have stopped, the skies around Fissure Eight are dark at night again. Orange and pink no longer light the clouds to my southeast; not for prettier sunsets, not when I step outside at midnight, not at all. The stars are brighter and clearer for it, though, and the Milky Way stretches like hyperdistant cotton candy in an arc across the sky. New ripples of black lava rock lie flat, cooling, and hard across places that used to be houses and tide pools. Humans can return and rebuild, as they always have. The vegetation has already started to grow in the cracks.
This scent, then, is for darkness; the stillness after a great sound or calamity, the coolness that comes when the fire has been gone for days, and the stirring of returning life. Dark musk, patchouli, frankincense, tobacco, air orchids, wet rainforest… and cornmint, for the sharp, clean brightness of stars.
