  1. In the bottle: Dragon’s blood and Mandarin orange peel on a base of spicy (Star Anise, a tiny bite of Szechuan pepper) amber, can’t detect any Myrrh. The main note is Dragon’s Blood but the soft sweet powdery aspect of DB without the sharp antiseptic bite I usually associate with it. Likewise the spice isn’t sharp at all, the blend is incredibly smooth and, despite the name, Oriental in nature rather than Egyptian. In the early stages smells exactly like the Chinese joss sticks and mandarins left as offerings during the Festival of Hungry Ghosts, I grew up in Singapore so I know the scent well; in the ending stages it’s VERY reminiscent of YSL’s Opium. Low sillage but good longevity, the spices save it from finishing too powdery after it goes through the powdery DB stage. I wouldn’t call this shallow, just different to all the other Royal Amber frags. If you like Chinese and Japanese incense you’ll love this one.

  2. This is not as amazing as I expected. The DB is quite muted and shy, and the RA seems to not be as rich and resinous as in other blends. Only a hint of Myrrh for warmth. Very mellow, a tad bit shallow.
