Seance

Brand: Solstice Scents

Scent Description:

Sage, Clove, Frankincense, Patchouli, Ylang Ylang & Sandalwood

Seance is a haunting blend of sage, clove, frankincense, ylang ylang, patchouli essential oils and a dash of sandalwood to awaken the spirit. It smells primarily of spicy clove and sage followed by a bit exotic and astringent frankincense oil. It has a deep, herbaceous, woody, spicy, earthy and musky fragrance.  The ylang ylang contributes a very subtle sweet/light floral note and the patchouli is grounding, contributing to the overall fullness of the Seance fragrance rather than standing apart as a dominant note like the sage, clove and frankincense do.  Contains both fragrance and essential oils.  Unisex.

  1. Notes: Sage, clove, frankincense, ylang ylang, patchouli essential oils, and a dash of sandalwood.

Seance was always going to be a toss-up for me, since patchouli doesn’t rank among my favourite scents and I amp clove, frankincense, and similar woody spices. Nonetheless, I love sandalwood and ylang ylang, so finding them together gave me high hopes. Seance is comfortably absent of any smoke in its notes. The strong whiff of sage and clove open up Seance, providing the strange blend of an opium den with a strong herbal tonic that proves hard to pin down. Chinese apothecary? Thanksgiving preparations where we used sage? The desert element that might come from patch, sage, and frankincense is curiously missing. I get the dry woodsiness, but a medicinal quality hidden in overly sweet trappings from the ylang ylang doesn’t strike quite right for me. Ylang ylang remained quite obscure in the mix, giving a slightly syrupy finish to the intense clove-sage combo.

The earthy and clove elements are definitely true, but the sage and the clove start overpowering everything else to a point I cannot pick up anything else. This one isn’t for me — it’s a strange blend of holiday cooking with two spices/herbs that would never meet unless you ate turkey on one hand and a cookie on the other.

  2. SO clove-y. Smelled like a really spicy chai. Could hardly get any other notes. Good longevity and throw, though.

  3. overwhelmingly sage. i don’t pick up anything else – maybe the tiniest hint of clove. to be frank, the herby smell of the sage is way too much.

  4. Smoky spices. I don’t pick up the Ylang Ylang or the sandalwood – this one is all sage, clove, and smoky musk to me.
